Match Report: NSW Cup Round 19 vs Newtown Jets

Western Suburbs Magpies produced a major upset in Round 19 of the NSW Cup on Saturday afternoon, beating Newtown Jets 24-22 at Henson Park.

The Magpies led 14-0, before the 2nd-placed Jets forced their way back into the contest, with only a late conversion from Zane Camroux securing an impressive win for Wests.

Western Suburbs were first to score on the day, as Liam Scolari gathered a loose pass from Israel Ogden and powered his way over in the left corner.

Tuki Simpkins crashed over after 11 minutes when a Rua Ngatikaura short ball gifted the big front rower over for his first try of the 2023 season.

A slick backline shift from the Magpies then put Scolari over for his second, before the Jets hit back with two quick-fire tries leaving the Magpies in front 14-10 at the break.

Connor Tracey’s 46th minute four-pointer was converted to put Newtown ahead for the first time in the match and hooker Sam Healey was next to score, extending the Jets’ lead out to eight points.

With seven minutes to go though, Ogden drew in three defenders to put Jack Boyling through a gap and bring the Magpies right back into the game.

With Newtown kicking the ball out on the full from the ensuing kick-off, the Magpies marched down the field and scored, with Boyling crashing over for his double.
