McCarthy’s Magpies on the Rise

No stranger to the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup scene, Western Suburbs Magpies Head Coach, Tyrone McCarthy is nurturing a crop of exciting young talent through the 2026 season.

The opening matches of the campaign weren't without their challenges, with the Magpies falling just short in a few tight contests. But McCarthy and the playing group refused to let the opportunity to learn and grow slip away.

“As frustrating as some of those early losses were, there were a lot of lessons from them.

“We knew that there was a bit of a learning curve for us as a group, so we used it as a way to grow.”

Hard work and reflection have since allowed the playing group to notch some important victories, turning over a new leaf in their season.

“I’m happy with the progress that’s been made with the group,” said McCarthy.

More important than striving for weekly results, he says that the key goal remains to foster an environment where NRL talent is cultivated.

“With my role, the development of the players is the priority.

“It’s nice to go and see those boys achieve that [NRL debut].

“Even the lads who were dropping down and helping them get their confidence back, then seeing them go and play.

“That’s why you coach, to see those stories.”

McCarthy adds that part of the process is ensuring no corners are cut along the way, and that the playing group sets the bar high.

“As long as we’re holding the standards and each other accountable, I know the success will follow.

You don’t want to be creating NRL players that are happy just playing NRL, you want to be creating NRL players that are wanting to win a comp

“We’re making sure that whenever we have a setback or a bit of adversity, we’re learning from it.”

Donning the iconic badge of one of Australian rugby league’s foundation clubs, McCarthy’s men are proudly adopting what it means to be a Magpie.

“The boys are owning it in their own way as a group, celebrating that Magpie identity and using it to to develop their own culture."

Given the dynamic nature of the professional sports landscape, McCarthy’s first season at the helm hasn’t been without its hurdles.

“In this Cup space when the NRL are depleted it really hurts you too.

“The six-man bench has definitely been a shock this year,” he added.

However, his ability to navigate through those difficulties has allowed both himself and the playing group to grow and develop at a rapid rate.

“I’m a big believer that with things like that, it’s a great opportunity to adapt.

“The core of the Cup squad has had a lot of game time over recent weeks and are performing really well.”

McCarthy’s vision remains clear as he ensures that the playing group continues to aim high as they strive to learn and grow.

“When trying to create a culture, I think if we can keep the boys pushing the standard in the Cup environment then more good things will happen at the Club too.

“What I’m excited about is the growth that we’ve had already. We keep staying positive, even after the tough stuff.

“I’m really happy with the progress that has been made with the boys and their buy-in, so just need to make sure we keep on the right track.”

But it’s more than just a one-man job, revealing that the more experienced players in the group play a massive part in setting the tone.

“The [young] boys look up to them as players, so their habits around what they do on game day is really important.

“The boys can see that in order to get to the top they’ve got to prepare as if they’re at the top right now.”
