Most grounds host matches. Leichhardt Oval is where generations of Tigers fans have witnessed moments they'll never forget.

The atmosphere, the history and the tradition inside this sacred ground are unmatched.

Join us as we take a brief look back at the history of what is commonly known as the ‘Eighth Wonder’.

Round 1, 1934 – Balmain Tigers vs Western Suburbs Magpies

On Anzac Day 1934, the Balmain Tigers played their opening game at the ground in Round 1 against the Western Suburbs Magpies, the Club they would merge with almost 70 years later.

The Magpies were victorious, winning 18-5 in front of a reported crowd of 5,000.

Round 2, 2000 – Wests Tigers vs Auckland Warriors

Fast forward to March 18, 2000, and the newly merged Wests Tigers played their second-ever NRL match at the Eighth Wonder, Leichhardt Oval.

Coming off a draw in Round 1, the joint venture commenced its NRL journey at Leichhardt Oval with a maiden 17-16 win over the then Auckland Warriors.

Depending on your view of what constitutes a first victory, the Wests Tigers had already recorded a win in a pre-season trial against fellow joint venture club the Northern Eagles on March 6, 2000.

Round 26, 2006 – Wests Tigers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs

Despite a difficult season on the field, with the Wests Tigers recording just nine wins, all three matches played at Leichhardt Oval ended in victory. That included the final match of the regular season at the Eighth Wonder.

In what would be John Skandalis, Shane Elford, Scott Prince and Anthony Laffranchi's final match at the venue, the boys in orange, black and white finished on a high, defeating the South Sydney Rabbitohs 52-18 in front of 18,440 fans.
The win featured one of Leichhardt's favourite sons, Robbie Farah, crossing for a try and registering three try assists.

Round 6, 2009 – Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm

It was a Monday night, the heavens had opened, and the hill was packed. A true classic of the Monday Night Football era.

The Wests Tigers faced competition heavyweights the Melbourne Storm in what was described at the time as "one of the greatest defensive displays in the joint venture's history".

It was Benji Marshall who ultimately set up Chris Lawrence for a 70-metre run to the line, with Lawrence beating an outstretched Billy Slater to seal victory for the home side.

Round 13, 2011 – Wests Tigers vs Newcastle Knights

The Tigers were taking on the Newcastle Knights in another Monday night spectacle at Leichhardt Oval.

Within the opening five minutes, returning winger Lote Tuqiri left the field with a leg injury, putting the home side on the back foot.

The scores would be locked at both half-time and full-time, forcing the match into Golden Point.

In the 87th minute, Robbie Farah collected the ball and, as the live commentary called:

"20 metres out, in front of the uprights, Robbie Farah, from dummy-half, wins the game."

Farah calmly slotted the field goal to secure a 17-16 victory over the Knights.

Round 1, 2012 – Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks

It was a blistering Sunday afternoon on the hill at Leichhardt Oval for the opening round of the 2012 season.

A perfectly weighted Benji Marshall grubber kick for Beau Ryan opened the scoring in just the second minute. Marshall then crossed for the Tigers' second try, before Ryan grabbed his second to level the full-time score at 16-16.

In Golden Point, Marshall stepped up from 35 metres out and sent Leichhardt Oval into complete chaos, nailing the match-winning field goal.

Round 20, 2025 – Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans

The home side started on the back foot, but in Taylan May's first game as a Tiger, he crossed for a try and, less than 10 minutes later, set up Jeral Skelton.

The May-to-Skelton combination would strike again in the final four minutes to level the scores at 20-20.

In the dying seconds of regular time, it was Adam Doueihi who seized the moment. A field goal at the Mary Street end sealed a dramatic win for the Wests Tigers, sending the great suburban ground into raptures.
