Wests Tigers are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Western Suburbs Magpies Player #578, George Downie.
George, 87, passed away last Saturday, surrounded by wife Helen, daughter Rochelle, son Brett and their families. He will be sadly missed.
George joined Western Suburbs in 1958 from the renowned rugby league school, Woodlawn College in Lismore.
A tough front rower who played well above his weight, George played 112 games for the Magpies across six seasons, including two successful third grade grand finals (1958 and 1961), and 11 appearances in first grade.
George filled many roles at the club over almost half a century, including third-grade Secretary, Committee and Board Member, and was also a debenture holder at Wests Ashfield Leagues for thirty years.
Wests Tigers offers its sincere condolences to George’s family and friends.
The funeral for George will be held on Friday 9th August (10:30am) at Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium, 199 Delhi Road, North Ryde.
